Grow Tent Setup Guide for Beginners
A grow tent is the easiest way to control your indoor growing environment. You can set one up in a spare room, a garage, a shed, or even a large closet. Everything stays contained: light, smell, humidity, temperature. And when you’re done, it packs away. We’ve helped hundreds of growers on the Sunshine Coast set up their first tent, and this guide covers everything we tell them in the store.
Why Use a Grow Tent
You could grow plants in an open room. Plenty of people do. But a tent gives you something an open room can’t: total environment control. The reflective interior walls bounce light back onto your plants instead of wasting it on the ceiling and floor. The sealed space lets you manage airflow, humidity, and temperature with much smaller (and cheaper) equipment than you’d need for a full room.
Tents also keep things clean. Light doesn’t leak out, and pests have a harder time getting in. If you’re growing in a house, the tent keeps moisture away from your walls and carpet. It’s a self-contained growing space that you can put almost anywhere.
The other big plus is portability. If you move house or want to rearrange, the tent comes apart in twenty minutes. Try doing that with a built-out grow room.
Choosing the Right Tent Size
Tent sizes are measured in feet or metres, depending on the brand. The three most common starter sizes are 2×2, 3×3, and 4×4 (in feet). Here’s a rough guide to what fits in each.
2×2 (60cm x 60cm)
Good for 1 to 2 plants. This is a solid choice for a first-time grower who wants to learn the basics without committing too much space or money. One small LED light is enough. Ventilation is simple. You can fit this in a wardrobe.
Limitations: you won’t get huge yields from a 2×2, and there’s not much room for error with plant training. If a plant stretches more than you expected, you’ll run out of headroom fast.
3×3 (90cm x 90cm)
The sweet spot for most home growers. Fits 2 to 4 plants comfortably. Enough room to train plants properly and still move around inside (sort of). A single 200W to 300W LED handles this space well.
A 3×3 gives you enough production to keep a personal supply going without needing a huge investment in lights and ventilation. This is what we recommend most to first-timers who want a proper setup, not just a learning exercise.
4×4 (120cm x 120cm)
Room for 4 to 8 plants, depending on pot size and growing style. You’ll want a 400W to 600W LED (or equivalent CMH/HPS) and a 6-inch inline fan. This is a serious home setup.
A 4×4 needs a dedicated space. It’s too big for most closets, but it fits nicely in a spare bedroom corner, a garage, or a shed. If you’re planning to run this size, you should also be thinking about climate control, because the heat output from a bigger light in a bigger tent adds up.

What You Need: The Full Equipment List
Here’s everything you’ll need to get a tent up and running. Some of this you can add later, but the starred items are non-negotiable for day one.
- Grow tent * (sized to your space and plant count)
- Grow light * (LED, CMH, or HPS, matched to tent size)
- Inline fan * (4-inch for 2×2/3×3, 6-inch for 4×4)
- Carbon filter * (same diameter as your inline fan)
- Ducting * (to connect fan, filter, and exhaust)
- Light hangers * (adjustable ratchet hangers)
- Timer * (for light schedule: 18/6 veg, 12/12 bloom)
- Clip fan (for air circulation inside the tent)
- Thermo-hygrometer (to monitor temperature and humidity)
- Growing system (pots with coco, DWC buckets, or another hydroponic system)
- Nutrients (base A and B plus any additives you’re running)
- pH and EC meter (you’ll need both)
That looks like a lot, but most of these items are one-time purchases. The ongoing costs are nutrients, growing media, and electricity.
Step 1: Assemble the Frame
Every grow tent comes with metal poles that slot together and a fabric shell that goes over the top. Start with the poles. Lay them all out, check the instruction sheet (most brands include one, though they vary in quality), and build the frame.
The poles usually push-fit or clip together. No tools required for most tents. Build the frame on the floor first, then stand it up. Don’t try to build it upright from the start. You’ll fight with it.
Once the frame is standing, pull the fabric shell over the top and zip it up. Make sure the fabric sits flat and the floor tray (if included) is sitting inside properly. The floor tray catches spills, so you want it sitting snug against all four walls.
Place the tent in its final position before you start loading equipment in. A loaded tent is heavy and awkward to move. Pick your spot, level the tent, and then move on to the next step.
Step 2: Hang Your Lights
Your light hangs from the top cross bars of the tent frame using ratchet hangers (sometimes called rope ratchets or yoyo hangers). These let you raise and lower the light easily as your plants grow.
How high the light sits depends on the type and wattage. As a rough starting point:
- LED (200W to 400W): 45 to 60cm above the canopy during veg, 30 to 45cm during flower.
- CMH (315W): 50 to 70cm above the canopy. CMH runs hotter than LED, so you need more distance.
- HPS (400W to 600W): 40 to 60cm above the canopy. Check heat with the back of your hand at canopy level. If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s too close for the plant.
Run the power cable out through one of the tent’s cable ports. Plug the light into a timer. For vegetative growth, set the timer to 18 hours on, 6 hours off. For flowering, switch to 12 and 12.

Step 3: Set Up Ventilation
Ventilation does three things: removes heat, controls humidity, and scrubs odour. You need an inline fan, a carbon filter, and ducting. That’s the core system.
How it connects
The most common setup hangs the carbon filter inside the tent, near the top. The inline fan sits either inside the tent (pulling air through the filter) or outside the tent (pulling air out). Ducting connects the filter to the fan, and then more ducting runs from the fan out through one of the tent’s exhaust ports.
Air flows like this: tent air goes into the carbon filter (which removes odour), through the ducting, through the inline fan, and out of the tent. The negative pressure created by the fan pulling air out also pulls fresh air in through the tent’s passive intake vents at the bottom.
Sizing your fan
- 2×2 or 3×3 tent: a 4-inch (100mm) inline fan is usually enough. Pair it with a 4-inch carbon filter.
- 4×4 tent: go with a 6-inch (150mm) fan and 6-inch carbon filter. A 4-inch fan in a 4×4 will struggle, especially in summer.
- Larger tents: 8-inch fans exist, but at that point, come talk to us. Big tents have specific airflow needs that depend on your light, your climate, and your ducting run.
Use the shortest ducting run you can manage. Every bend and extra metre of ducting reduces airflow. Straight and short is the goal. If you need to run ducting through a wall or ceiling, use a rigid duct, not the flexible foil type.

Step 4: Climate Control
Now that your tent has air moving through it, you need to dial in the temperature and humidity. A thermo-hygrometer inside the tent (at canopy level) tells you both numbers at a glance.
Temperature targets
- Lights on: 24 to 28 degrees Celsius. Most plants do best around 25 to 26.
- Lights off: 18 to 22 degrees. You want a drop, but not a huge one. A 5 to 8 degree swing between day and night is normal.
On the Sunshine Coast, summer heat is the main challenge. Your tent is inside a room that might already be 30+ degrees, and the light adds more heat on top of that. LED lights generate less heat than HPS, which is one of the big reasons they’ve become so popular for tent growers.
If heat is an issue, run your lights at night when the ambient temperature is lower. A bigger exhaust fan or an air-conditioned room also helps.
Humidity targets
- Seedlings and clones: 65 to 75% relative humidity. Young plants need more moisture in the air because their root systems aren’t developed enough to pull water efficiently.
- Vegetative growth: 50 to 65%. Lower it gradually as the plant matures.
- Flowering: 40 to 55%. High humidity during flower causes mould and bud rot. This is where people lose crops.
- Late flower: 35 to 45%. Keep it as low as you can manage in the final 2 to 3 weeks.
If humidity is too high, increase your exhaust fan speed or add a small dehumidifier. If it’s too low (rare on the Sunshine Coast, but it happens in winter), a humidifier or a wet towel near the intake vent works. See our environmental control range for controllers, monitors, and humidifiers.
Step 5: Set Up Your Growing System Inside
With the tent assembled, lit, and ventilated, it’s time to put your growing system in. What that looks like depends on how you want to grow.
- Pots with coco or soil: the simplest option. Fabric pots (10L to 20L) sitting on saucers or in a drip tray. Hand-water or set up a drip system. Great for beginners.
- Deep water culture (DWC): plants sit in net pots over buckets of oxygenated nutrient solution. Fast growth, bigger yields, but you need to monitor pH and EC daily.
- NFT or flood and drain: recirculating systems that work well in larger tents. More plumbing, more moving parts, but efficient once dialled in.
For your first tent, we usually recommend coco in fabric pots. It’s forgiving, it’s light, and it drains well. You can hand-water for a couple of plants without any pumps or timers. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can upgrade to a hydroponic system on your next run.
Whatever system you choose, make sure it fits inside the tent with room to spare. You need access to the plants from at least two sides, and you need space for your fan, filter, and ducting. A tent that’s packed wall to wall with pots is a nightmare to maintain.

Common Setup Mistakes
We see these regularly at the store. Most of them are easy to avoid if you know to look for them.
- No carbon filter from day one. People think they can add it later. The smell hits before you expect it, and by then you’re scrambling. Install the filter when you set up the tent. Not after.
- Light leaks. During the dark period (especially in flower), any light getting into the tent can stress the plant and cause problems. Check all the zippers and ports. If light leaks in, tape over it.
- Skipping the clip fan. The exhaust fan moves air out, but you also need air moving inside the tent. A small clip fan on one of the poles creates airflow across the canopy, strengthens stems, and helps prevent hot spots and mould.
- Undersized exhaust fan. A fan that’s too small for your tent can’t remove heat fast enough. Your temperatures climb, your plants stress, and your yields suffer. Size up if you’re between two options.
- Putting the tent on carpet. Spills happen. Water and carpet don’t mix. Put a waterproof mat or tray under the tent, or set it up on a hard floor. Your landlord (or your partner) will thank you.
- Forgetting the timer. Running lights manually is a recipe for inconsistent schedules. Missed hours during flower mess with the plant’s cycle. A timer costs a few dollars. Buy one.
- Overcrowding. More plants doesn’t always mean more yield. Crowded plants compete for light and air. They also create humid microclimates where mould thrives. Give each plant enough room to breathe.
Ongoing Maintenance
Once your tent is running, it’s not set-and-forget. Here’s what to stay on top of.
- Check pH and EC daily (or every second day at minimum). Small drifts are normal. Big swings mean something is off.
- Inspect plants daily. Look at the leaves. Are they green and perky, or drooping and yellowing? Catching problems early is the difference between a quick fix and a lost crop.
- Clean the tent between runs. Wipe down the interior walls, wash the floor tray, clean your pots or system. Leftover salts, dead roots, and biofilm from the last run create problems for the next.
- Replace the carbon filter when it stops working. Most carbon filters last 12 to 18 months, depending on humidity and how hard you run them. If you start smelling things outside the tent, the carbon is spent.
- Check your fan and ducting for dust buildup. A dusty fan moves less air. Wipe the blades down every few months. Shake out or replace flexible ducting if it gets clogged.
- Recalibrate your pH and EC meters. Do this monthly with calibration solution. A meter that reads 0.3 off on pH is enough to cause nutrient lockout. Calibration takes 2 minutes.
Setting up a grow tent is one of those things that feels overwhelming until you’ve done it once. Then it clicks. The equipment is straightforward, the principles are simple, and once you’ve got it dialled in, it mostly runs itself with daily check-ins.
