Getting Started with Hydroponics

You want to grow your own food (or flowers, or herbs) and you’ve heard hydroponics is the way to go. But where do you actually start? There’s a lot of information out there, and a fair chunk of it is confusing, contradictory, or just plain wrong.

We’ve been helping people on the Sunshine Coast get into hydroponics since 1990. Over 35 years, we’ve seen every mistake, tried every system, and helped thousands of growers go from zero to harvest. This guide is everything we wish someone had handed us when we started.

What Hydroponics Actually Is (and Isn’t)

Hydroponics is growing plants without soil. That’s it. Instead of soil, your plants’ roots sit in a nutrient-rich water solution, or in an inert growing medium like clay balls, rockwool, or coco coir that gets fed with that solution.

The idea has been around for centuries. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon may have used a form of it. NASA uses it to grow food in space. And plenty of everyday people use it in spare rooms, garages, greenhouses, and backyards across Australia.

What it’s not: some kind of magic. Your plants still need light, water, nutrients, air, and the right temperature. Hydroponics just gives you more control over all of those things. More control means faster growth, bigger yields, and fewer problems with pests and disease.

It’s also not as complicated as it looks when you first start reading about it. Most beginners overthink it. Plants want to grow. Your job is to not get in their way.

Why Grow Hydroponically

There are real, practical reasons to choose hydro over soil. Not just hype. Here’s what actually matters.

Faster growth. Plants grown in hydro typically grow 30 to 50 percent faster than the same plants in soil. The roots don’t have to search for food. It’s right there in the water, exactly when they need it.

Bigger yields. More growth in less time means more production from the same space. If you’re limited on room (and most home growers are), this matters a lot.

Less water use. This surprises people, but hydro actually uses less water than soil growing. The water recirculates through the system instead of draining away. In a place like the Sunshine Coast where water conservation matters, that’s a real plus.

No soil pests. No soil means no soil-borne bugs, fungus gnats, or root diseases. You’ll still need to keep things clean, but you’re starting with a much cleaner slate.

Year-round growing. With a grow tent and the right lights, you control the seasons. Grow lettuce in July. Tomatoes in August. Whatever you want, whenever you want.

You control everything. In soil, you’re guessing. In hydro, you can measure your pH, your nutrient strength (EC), your water temperature. If something’s off, you can fix it the same day instead of waiting to see what happens.

Types of Hydroponic Systems

There are several types of hydroponic systems. Each works a bit differently. Some are better for beginners, some are better for experienced growers chasing maximum output. Here are the main ones you’ll come across.

Deep Water Culture (DWC)

The simplest system. Your plant sits in a net pot with clay balls, suspended over a bucket or tub of nutrient solution. An air pump bubbles oxygen into the water so the roots can breathe.

DWC is cheap, easy to set up, and forgiving. It’s what we recommend for most beginners. One plant per bucket. You can start with a single bucket and scale up from there.

The downside: you need to watch your water temperature and top up the reservoir as the plant drinks. In summer on the Sunshine Coast, water temps can climb fast. A water chiller or frozen bottles can help.

Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)

A thin film of nutrient solution flows along the bottom of a sloped channel. Plant roots sit in the channel and absorb nutrients as the water passes by. The water drains back into a reservoir and gets pumped through again.

NFT works well for leafy greens, herbs, and smaller plants. It’s popular in commercial setups. For home growers, it requires a pump and some plumbing, so it’s a step up from DWC.

One thing to watch: if your pump fails, the roots dry out fast. There’s no reservoir of water sitting around the roots like in DWC. So reliability matters here.

Drip Systems

Nutrient solution gets pumped from a reservoir and dripped onto the base of each plant through small tubes. The runoff drains back to the reservoir (recirculating) or to waste (run-to-waste).

Drip systems are flexible. You can use them with coco coir, rockwool, clay balls, or other media. They work for plants of all sizes. Many commercial growers use drip systems because they’re reliable and scalable.

Run-to-waste drip in coco coir is one of the most popular setups we see on the Sunshine Coast. It’s simple, consistent, and hard to mess up once you’ve got your feeding schedule sorted.

Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain)

A tray filled with growing media gets flooded with nutrient solution on a timer, then drains back into the reservoir. The cycle repeats several times a day.

Ebb and flow is versatile. You can grow lots of smaller plants or a few big ones. The roots get a good balance of nutrients and oxygen because they’re not sitting in water all the time.

The setup is a bit more involved (you need a tray, a reservoir, a pump, and a timer), but it’s still manageable for a home grower. Great for people who want to grow a variety of plants in one system.

Which System Should You Start With?

If you’re brand new, go with DWC or a coco drip setup. Both are forgiving, affordable, and teach you the basics without overwhelming you. Once you understand how nutrients, pH, and plant health work together, you can move to more advanced systems if you want to.

Honestly, plenty of experienced growers stick with DWC or coco drip forever. Fancier doesn’t always mean better.

What You Need to Get Started

Here’s a practical list of everything you need for a basic indoor hydro setup. Don’t go overboard on your first run. Start simple, learn the process, then upgrade.

  • A grow tent (1.2m x 1.2m is a great starting size). Keeps light in and pests out. See our grow tent setup guide for specifics.
  • A grow light (LED is the best starting point for most people). We break down all the options in our LED vs CMH vs HPS lighting guide.
  • A hydroponic system (DWC bucket or coco pots with a drip feed). Depends on what you’re growing and how much space you have.
  • Growing medium (clay balls for DWC, coco coir for drip systems). Coco is lightweight, reusable, and holds moisture well.
  • Nutrients (a base A+B formula to start). Brands like Canna, FloraMax, and Supreme Creations all make solid starter products. More on this in our nutrient guide.
  • pH meter and EC meter (or a combo unit). Non-optional. If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Full details in our pH and EC guide.
  • pH adjustment solutions (pH Up and pH Down). You’ll use these every time you mix nutrients.
  • An extraction fan and carbon filter for air circulation and odour control.
  • A clip fan or oscillating fan inside the tent for air movement. Keeps stems strong and prevents mould.
  • A timer for your lights. Most plants want 18 hours of light in veg and 12 hours in flower.
  • A thermometer/hygrometer to monitor temperature and humidity. Cheap ones work fine.

That’s it for the essentials. You can add extras later (CO2 supplementation, water chillers, automated controllers), but none of that matters until you’ve got the basics down. Browse our shop if you want to see what’s available, or drop in and we’ll help you put a kit together.

Choosing Your Nutrients

Nutrients are your plant’s food. In soil, the plant finds food in the ground. In hydro, you provide everything. That means getting it right matters more.

Most nutrient lines follow the same basic structure: a base nutrient (usually an A and B formula that you mix together), plus additives for specific stages or purposes (root stimulants, bloom boosters, enzymes).

The three brands we sell the most of are Canna, FloraMax, and Supreme Creations. Each has strengths. Canna is the gold standard, widely trusted, made in the Netherlands. FloraMax is Australian-made, high-performance, and excellent value. Supreme Creations is also Australian and popular with growers who want solid results without the premium price.

Don’t mix brands for your base nutrients. Pick one line and stick with it. Mixing base A from one brand with base B from another is a recipe for lockout and deficiencies.

Lighting Basics

Light is the engine of plant growth. Without enough of the right kind of light, nothing else matters. Your nutrients can be perfect, your pH dialled in, your temperature spot on. But if the light is weak or the wrong spectrum, your plants will stretch, stay small, and produce very little.

There are three main types of grow lights you’ll see:

  • LED (Light Emitting Diode). The most efficient option. Low heat output, low power bills, long lifespan. Modern full-spectrum LEDs work great from seedling through to harvest. This is what we recommend for most new growers.
  • CMH/LEC (Ceramic Metal Halide / Light Emitting Ceramic). Produces a broad, natural-looking spectrum. Good for veg and flower. Runs hotter than LED but cooler than HPS. Popular with growers who like a balance of performance and cost.
  • HPS (High Pressure Sodium). The old workhorse. Puts out a lot of light, especially in the red/orange spectrum that plants love during flowering. Runs hot, uses more power, but still has its fans.

For a 1.2m x 1.2m tent, you’ll want something in the 300 to 600 watt range, depending on the technology and what you’re growing. Our full lighting comparison goes deep on spectrum, efficiency, heat, cost, and which light suits which setup.

Understanding pH and EC

This is the part that trips up most beginners, but it doesn’t need to. Two numbers. That’s all you need to keep track of.

pH tells you how acidic or alkaline your nutrient solution is. Most hydroponic plants want a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. If the pH drifts outside that range, your plants can’t absorb certain nutrients, even if those nutrients are sitting right there in the water. This is called nutrient lockout, and it’s the number one cause of deficiency symptoms in hydro.

EC (electrical conductivity) tells you how strong your nutrient solution is. Think of it as measuring the amount of dissolved food in your water. Too low and your plants go hungry. Too high and you’ll burn the roots.

You need a pH meter and an EC meter (or a combo unit). Check your solution every time you mix it and at least every couple of days in your reservoir. We cover the full details, including ideal ranges, calibration, and troubleshooting, in our pH and EC guide.

Setting Up Your First Grow Tent

A grow tent is the easiest way to create a controlled growing environment indoors. It’s a reflective-lined enclosure with ports for ducting, cables, and ventilation. You put your light, your plants, your fans, and your system inside, and everything stays contained.

For a first setup, we recommend a 1.2m x 1.2m x 2m tent. That gives you enough room for four to six plants (depending on pot size and system type) without taking over your spare room.

Inside the tent, you’ll mount your light at the top, hang your carbon filter and extraction fan, set up your system on the floor, and run your clip fan for circulation. It sounds like a lot of gear, but it all fits together pretty neatly once you see how it goes.

Common Beginner Mistakes

After 35 years in the shop, we’ve heard them all. Here are the ones that come up again and again. Avoiding these will save you time, money, and a lot of frustration.

Overfeeding

The number one mistake. New growers think more nutrients equals more growth. It doesn’t. It equals burnt roots, crispy leaf tips, and nutrient lockout. Start at half the recommended dose on the bottle and work up slowly. Watch how your plants respond.

Ignoring pH

You can have the best nutrients in the world, but if your pH is off, your plants can’t use them. Check it every time you mix a fresh batch. Adjust it every time. It takes 30 seconds and prevents about 80 percent of the problems people bring into our shop.

Not Enough Airflow

Plants need fresh air. Stagnant air leads to mould, mildew, and weak stems. Run your extraction fan on a timer or a speed controller, and keep a clip fan moving air across your canopy. Your plants should be gently swaying, not sitting still in dead air.

Too Much Light Too Early

Seedlings and clones don’t need full blast. Start your light higher up and dim it if your fixture allows. Then gradually lower it and increase intensity as the plant grows. Blasting a young seedling with 600 watts of light is like going from a dark room straight into the midday sun. They don’t like it.

Cheap pH Meters

A ten dollar pH pen from the internet will give you a reading. Whether that reading is accurate is another question. Get a decent meter, calibrate it regularly, and store it properly. It’s one of the most important tools in your setup, so treat it that way.

Not Keeping It Clean

Algae, slime, dead roots. They all build up if you don’t clean your reservoir and lines between grows. A dirty system is an invitation for root rot and pathogens. Scrub your gear, sterilise with hydrogen peroxide or a dedicated cleaner, and start each grow fresh.

Changing Too Many Things at Once

Something’s wrong with your plant. You panic. You change the nutrients, adjust the pH, move the light, add a fan, and switch to a new feeding schedule all in one go. Now you have no idea what fixed it (or what made it worse). Change one thing at a time. Give it a few days. Then assess.

Overwatering in Coco

Coco coir is not soil. It looks like soil, feels like soil, but it behaves differently. New growers sometimes water their coco like they would a pot of garden mix: once a day, a little bit, and let it dry out. Coco actually likes to stay moist. In a proper drip setup, you might feed four to six times a day. Check your runoff EC and pH to know what’s happening in the root zone.

Where to Go From Here

You’ve got the overview. Now it’s time to pick a direction and go deeper. Here’s the order we recommend for beginners.

  • Pick your system. DWC or coco drip for your first grow. Don’t overthink it.
  • Read the nutrient guide. Understand what you’re feeding your plants and why. Choosing the right nutrients.
