Usage Instructions
Big Mama blocks require initial preparation and top-feeding (hand watering or drippers), as they are not optimized for bottom-flooding systems like ebb-and-flow without supplementation. They work best with well-rooted transplants from smaller Grodan media (e.g., 3″ Gro-Blocks).
- Preparation and Saturation:
- Soak in pH-adjusted nutrient solution (EC 1.5+ mS/cm, pH 5.5–6.5) until fully submerged and bubbling stops (~10–15 minutes). Alternatively, use overhead irrigation with a coarse spray until saturated.
- Drain excess; target 70–80% water content (WC). Weigh blocks to verify uniformity (aim for 6,400g saturated weight).
- For transplant: Insert a rooted cutting/seedling into the top, ensuring roots contact the wool.
- Irrigation:
- Use 1–2 pressure-compensated drip emitters (0.3–0.5 gph) per block, placed diagonally 1–1.5″ deep.
- Initial: 3% shots (251 mL) every 1–4 hours for rooting-in (first 24–72 hours, WC 60–70%).
- Ongoing: Irrigate when WC drops to 60–65% (or 20–30% weight loss); aim for 5–25% daily runoff. Frequency: 1–multiple events/day, starting 0–4 hours after lights-on.
- Vegetative: Frequent small doses, higher WC (60–70%). Flowering: Larger doses with dry-backs, WC 50–75%.
- Transplanting and Maintenance:
- Start with vigorous propagules; mist lightly post-transplant until roots establish (2–3 days).
- Monitor with scales or GroSens sensors for WC, EC, and temperature.
- Avoid over-saturation (slows growth) or full dry-outs (<25% WC).
For ebb-and-flow: Supplement with top-watering, as the top may dry unevenly.
